AL’s Ivy elected NCC mayor for 2nd consecutive term

Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy has been elected as the Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) for the second consecutive time.

Ivy received 174602 more votes than BNP backed Shakhwat.

She received 74,566 votes while BNP candidate advocate Shakhawat Hossain Khan 36,369 votes at 70 centers in Narayanganj.

The vote counting began after polling closed at 4 pm.

Vote counting at the polling centres of the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Election began after a peaceful day of vote casting on Thursday (December 22).

Presiding officers will announce the results of their respective centers after counting the votes in presence of the polling agents.

Then the results of the individual centres will be sent to the returning officer at the DC Office.


After that, the unified final result will be announced after checking the votes of the individual centres.

The balloting began at 8 am and continued till 4 pm without any break.

This is the country’s first city election that is being held along the political party line.

The election to the mayoral post was held with both political party-nominated candidates and independent contestants, while election to councillor posts in a non-partisan manner.

Some 4.75 lakh voters were expected to vote in 174 polling stations.

Mohammad Abdullah, Secretary of the Election Commission, said, we are expecting that nearly 60% of total voters have cast their votes as almost 30% was cast by 12pm.

The poling was held in a festive and peaceful manner, he said.

All the parties including ruling Awami League and BNP have expressed their satisfaction about the election process.

There have been no complaints of any kind of fraud or clash.

However, BNP-backed candidate Shakhawat said that fewer voters appeared to cast their vote than he expected.

It is because of illegal pressure created by a certain group, he added.
